The hippocampus, a key brain region for memory, acts as a "scaffolding" engine for dreams by assembling memories, spatial environments, and experiences into coherent, often emotional, narratives. While it helps build detailed, episodic-like dreams, it is not absolutely required for all dreaming, as individuals with damage can still dream.
